Open-Source HTML Editors

Strictly speaking, there is no OpenOffice.org alternative to Frontpage. The OpenOffice.org suite contains Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base and Math. There is no WYSIWYG HTML editor included in the OpenOffice.org suite.

However, there are many WYSIWYG HTML editors that are available for free. Two frequently recommended options are Mozilla SeaMonkey and NVu. Neither of these options will completely replace FrontPage, but if you just need to edit a HTML document created in FrontPage, either will work just fine.

SeaMonkey is not just an HTML editor; it also includes a browser, email, and newsgroup features. One major feature that SeaMonkey lacks is support for templates. If you are accustomed to using templates in FrontPage, this may be a reason not to look to SeaMonkey as a replacement.

NVu is also a WYSIWYG HTML editor, however, the group that created the program has discontinued support for the package. NVu is, however, a very easy to use and understand editor and, unlike SeaMonkey, does support templates.

Do not overlook the usefulness of Notepad, a program included with most Windows installations. There are numerous benefits to using a simple text editor like Notepad, the main being the HTML code you create using this editor will be much more accurate and will take up less space. WYSIWYG editors generally create complicated HMTL that is much larger than hand-coded HTML. Again, if you are intersted in using templates or do no know any HTML, this is not a great option. If you are comfortable learning/using a little HTML, any of these options should serve your needs.

Wikipedia has a great comparision of other different HTML editors, available here.

This has been very helpful. Thank you so much Eric. I do know a little html. Perhaps I should take your suggestion to try SeaMonkey or NVu. I have just installed OpenOffice on my notebook, but retained Windows on my PC. I guess the hardest part here would be adjusting to the change. But I am decided on OO. Thank you so much again.
